Sun-dried Laundry: Another Reason to Love the Sun

Oh I just love the smell of fresh sun-dried laundry! After years of using a rope concoction in my backyard, I finally broke down and bought a rotary clothesline. I’ve used it for about six months now and I’m happy to report that I’m very pleased with it. After researching all the brands from the ultra-cheap to the top of the line Hills Hoist, I went with the middle-of-road Brabantia brand. It is sturdy, made of durable components, easy to install and fold away, height adjustable, and it spins, making my job slightly easier. Fresh laundry smell aside, the other added benefit is the sun’s UV rays naturally bleach and whiten my whites.

I also lowered my energy use and consequently, utility cost, although in my case it wasn’t that much – about $20 a year. Here’s a great site to estimate energy consumption of various home appliances.

Yep, it takes more work. Though it is a great activity for the kids to take part in (the little ones can hand you clothespins) all the while getting chores done and breaking our outdoor time into 10 – 15 minute chunks throughout the day. Having said that, I’m glad the weather is finally cooling off in Austin after record highs all summer long and I’m going back to using my dryer and shorter laundering time. It’s great to have options!

Rotary clotheslines are seasonal items (here in the US) and many are now on sale.
