Mix Your Own Wild Rice Blend

wild-rice-blend

Many wild rice blends actually contain very little wild rice. If you’re fortunate enough to have a bulk foods section at your grocery store, you can easily find all the ingredients in a typical rice blend: long grain rice (brown and white), black and red wild rice, orzo (plain or whole wheat – technically not rice but found in many rice blends like Uncle Ben’s). Blends contain partially boiled (parboiled) rice so it’s easy to cook over the stove top. They’re also more expensive.

If you use a rice cooker, it’s even easier to prepare than over a stove top. Just remember to select rice with about the same liquid and cooking time requirements. For example, don’t cook brown and white rice together. Brown rice needs more liquid and longer cooking time.

Here’s my standard wild rice blend that I cook in a rice cooker:

  • 2 1/4 cups brown long grain rice
  • 1/4 cup black wild rice
  • 1/4 cup red wild rice
  • 1/4 cup bulgur wheat (optional)
