According to the ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP's (which is a widely accredited source) 2010 annual list of best sunscreens (both for beach use & everyday use), ONLY sunscreens with zinc - micronised or not - and /or titanium, MAKE their list. None of those considered (by most consumers) to be made by reputable companies (such as Neutrogena, and their heavily promoted 'Helioplex' sunscreens) are even ON the list. NONE. Nor is any sunscreen with an SPF higher than 35 listed (again, including the aforementioned 'reputable' companies).

Another thing people need to understand: just because the fall is almost upon us, that DOES NOT mean that you should STOP using sunscreen.

Additionally, you WILL be exposed to UVA/UVB rays even on CLOUDY days.

Bearing that in mind, wearing any sunscreen (that follows these guidelines) is more of a personal taste. Protecting your skin is a daily/monthly/yearly - lifelong - necessity (that SHOULD be instilled in children - as it's best to start protecting your skin - and learning why - asap). Like brushing your teeth, combing your hair, applying sunscreen's should be part of your daily grooming regimen (for those of us who are exposed to the sun all, or most of the day, or are swimming or sweating, reapplication of sunscreen afterwards is a must).

While people (particularly children) had an aversion to the greasy-style sunscreens of yore, most of today's sunscreens dry on the skin (after applying ANY sunscreen, you should wait 10-15 minutes before sun exposure.

Finally, please remember: once ANY sun damage has been done (a sun 'tan' IS damage), your skin's irrevocably changed - for the worse. Kids who want that 'beach tan' NOW, WILL pay the price.

Take care of your skin. You're given a fresh 'suit' of it at birth, and you CAN'T 'trade it in.'

1. Yes - TiO2 is redundant if you already have ZnO. Sunscreen base is not as important with respect to sun protection itself. But it is important with respect to other factors like water resistancy.
2. No - It depends on the concentration you use and also your blending technique. Improper technique will result in clumps whether you use micronized or not (though the sunscreen is still useable - you just have to rub and spread more). That's the short answer. Long answer is in the upcoming e-report ;-)

Two questions. 1. So really all you NEED to protect the skin is zinc oxide (I realize some use titanium dioxide)? The rest of the ingredients in natural suncreens are not necessary for sunscreen protection?

2. If a person bought micronized zinc oxide and mixed with my current lotion would I be correct is saying it would go on the skin easier and wouldn't be as pasty looking?

Hmmm...it depends on your needs. I recommend mixing zinc oxide in about 7-12% concentration. I.e., a 10 oz lotion would contain 0.7 to 1.2 oz zinc oxide by weight.
