Thanks for the information here, it's helping me a lot. I've been reading about making creams and lotions at other websites and I got many doubts...

Do I have to use the zinc oxid in a lotion or can I put it in a protective (barrier) cream?

I can't find the emulsifying wax (I live in Brazil), and I found at the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database that borax isn't so safe for skin http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/705996/SODIUM_BORATE/
Then should I try beeswax with lecithin?

Can I substitute beeswax for soy wax in a cream? What's the difference?

I'm sorry for asking so many questions at once :)

@Suzanne - I just listed zinc oxide on my online store.
http://www.wabisabibaby.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=73
You can also get them from stores that sell educational chemistry products. Stores that sell mineral makeup products also sell zinc oxide - check to make sure they are uncoated and non-micro/nano.

Yes, start with this:
http://www.wabisabibaby.com/blog/2008/water-resistant-sunscreen-recipe/
You can skip the aloe vera and use 2.8 oz water.
I have other recipes for even more water-resistant, higher ZnO concentration sunscreen in my upcoming e-report.

With this being for my daughters that are having allergic reactions to sunscreen chemicals, I've narrowed it down to zinc oxide that works well. But how do I make it waterproof for swimming days? We tried a natural sunscreen at an alarming price, but after a half hour of serious play- it was running off of them.. I'd like to make my own waterproof sunscreen, any recipes?

I've read it somewhere that micronized zinc oxide gives better sun protection than conventional zinc oxide because the particles are smaller therefore, give better coverage on the skin. Micronized particles create a thin, even layer of protection that is more transparent than non-micronized varieties. Yet, non coated micronized zinc oxide is photosensitive. I still can't make up my mind.

Micronized zinc oxide in commercial sunscreen is fine, but use conventional zinc oxide at home. Detailed post on this coming up.

This is a great site for someone like me. I'm new to making my own moisturiser/sunscreen. Still in the process of what to order and how to do it. I'm glad I found this website. I'd still like to know more about using regular zinc oxide or micronize zinc oxide though. I'm leaning towards the regular zinc oxide.
