Half potting soil and half perlite. This is my standard mix for both starting seeds and rooting cuttings, my other favorite way to propagate plants. If it doesn’t sprout or root in this medium (or via direct sowing), then it’s too much trouble and doesn’t belong in my garden. For my seed trays, I use the nursery trays that hold 4″ pots. They usually give them away to take home your purchases in. First, I layer it with the perlite, then the potting soil and give it a light stir. I don’t try to evenly mix them because the perlite is much lighter and over time with watering, the perlite floats to the top. When it comes time to plant, I use a spoon to scoop out the seedlings.
