Maker Faire Austin 2008

Today, I went to Maker Faire for the first time. All I have to say is, WOW!!! I took my son with me and there was something to see and do for both of us. The highlight for him was definitely the RoboGames. If you’re in Austin and looking for something to do for the whole family, the event goes on again tomorrow from 10am to 6pm. Be sure to print out the schedule as they will not have any available on site. They will have maps though. I wish I had taken more pictures of the crafts, but much of my schedule was dictated by my son. I did, however, stop by and chat a little with a fellow crafter I had not seen in years, Jennifer of Textile Fetish. Check out her indie shop here. Her girl clothes are adorable!!!

Here’s a recap of the battle of the bots on Saturday at noon: There were only three battles at the noon hour since the RoboGames shared the same arena as ArcAttack and had to stop at the end of the hour. During that hour, we saw Ziggy defeat Steel Reign in the Super Heavyweight division, plunging him over the bumpers. I had the wrong settings on my camcorder so the first video is a bit fuzzy.

Due to technical difficulties, the Ice Cube vs Warsaw battle did not happen. I think Warsaw had radio control frequency issues – correct me if I’m wrong. Then, it was Emily vs Pipe Wrench. That battle lasted the 3 minute duration and came down to the judges’ decision: 16 – 17, Pipe Wrench.

The last battle was Big B vs Texas Heat. That one also lasted the 3 minute duration even though at one point, it looked like Texas Heat was stuck against the bumpers. The final judges’ decision was 14 – 19 for Big B despite a booing crowd. Texas Heat showed a lot of crowd pleasing flame but as David Calkins pointed out during the pre-game Q&A, fire is all for show and does little for the combat. Yet, my son was wowed by the flames. He turned to me and said, “Mom, I think the judges will pick Texas Heat”.
